The journey of KOSHISH began in the year 2011 when few students of Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology (KNIT), Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, decided to visit the nearby villages. That day, we interacted with many villagers and tried to understand their needs and approach towards life. It was the biggest irony to observe that just outside the walls of one of the premium education Institute of KNIT (which produced hundreds of graduates every year), there were numerous children who were deprived (and ignorant too) of Right to Education (a basic fundamental right). For a few selected children, who went to primary schools, education was just limited to getting midday-meal. A proper and basic education was nothing but less than a dream for these village-kids. The thought of higher education was even several miles away from their dreams. The situation was worst for the girls who were not able to think beyond helping their parents in the household. It's said that “Parents shape the child's future, and Child's future shapes the society”; but, sadly the parent of these villages weren't aware of the power and the need of their child’s education.

All this was enough to stir a revolution within us. But, how to proceed further in making the changes was still not clear? That day, we decided that unless we change the mentality of these unaware guardians towards education, we will not stop. This motivated us to start a program to regularly teach the village children, free of cost. But, this was not enough. To convince the parents of theses villages for sending their children in our classes was still a challenge. The KOSHISH team frequently travelled to these villages and made parents understand the value of education. After a lot of efforts, some guardians understood and agreed to send their children regularly. This is how the foundation of KOSHISH was laid, and the journey for providing free education to deprived village children started. We named it KOSHISH because it was a ‘try’ towards our mission of providing quality education to the needy children and achieving our motto of “Each step towards literacy”.

“Adrenaline can only lift you up, but what gets you going is your stability”.

We started decently, but, soon we realised that this journey is not going to be very smooth. However, with the involvement of many motivated people who think alike, it was possible to transition from educating 4-5 children to more than thousand (1000-1500) village-kids in a period of 10 years. This was our small effort to bring a revolution in the hamlet of Sultanpur. Since then, we have not looked back and the education-scenario has tremendously improved. The villagers have also started believing in KOSHISH family. Now, more than 250 needy children are every day provided quality education after their school hours. The nearby primary schools are also aware of our qualitative and innovative style of teaching, therefore, they encourage their students to attend KOSHISH classes regularly.

Our team, currently, consist of more than forty members contributing to our aim of delivering quality education to the deprived and disadvantaged children. Lots of physical, moral and financial support have been coming through the KOSHISH members, pass-out KNIT students and others.

We do not want to limit ourselves to Sultanpur. We aspire to provide quality education to all the needy children of India. This is something which cannot be achieved alone but we need the support of people having the same thinking as KOSHISH family to make India “Vishwa-guru” again.
